I hinted in
my last blog that although I was successful in not thinking about attachment or trauma issues in children for the majority of my recent vacation time, there were a few exceptions. The most notable time was the night all the cowgirls and two guides headed out for our moonlight ride.
Because my horse, Dillon, had developed quite an attitude about being in the middle of the pack and potentially getting kicked, we were always relegated to the back of the line. So as we headed up the trail, Dillon and I were bringing up the rear, but we were flanked by one of the two “wranglers”.
There’s nothing like rocking along on the back of a horse to make you relax and unwind. As I rode next to the pretty young blond who, in addition to being one of our guides that night had arranged all the details for the entire weekend, we found ourselves looking out over the mare and foal pasture. We started talking horses and animal husbandry and pretty soon the conversation turned to me having a veterinary degree. The obvious next question is why I am not practicing, and I briefly (and I do mean
briefly) explained about having adopted kids with issues and the changes that brought about in my life.

“I’m adopted!” she stated. And then she proceeded to describe a very positive attitude and outlook about adoption and what it had meant in her life. She considered herself fortunate, she loved her (adoptive) parents very much, and she didn’t have a shred of victim mentality or self pity emanating from her. It was awesome.... and she is awesome. She's a really "together" gal that any parent would be proud to call their daughter.
So, I really don’t know why I asked her what I asked her… Was it God giving me a powerful nudge? Was it something that she said that made me wonder if she believed what she was saying? (I don’t think so, for she was very genuine.) Or was it precisely
because she was so genuine that I asked my question… which was, “So, do you have any trust issues?”
Next up I’ll tell you what she said! For a hint,
read this.
